The Theory: Insight D
“Theory of Graceful Aging’’
After 2 decades of brainstorming and research
studies, “Graceful Aging” of Miss Letty Kuan was born. This is a theory that
speaks of how happiness from younger years will be important in later stage of
life. Based from that, she conceptualized frameworks which are as follows:
Acquisition, Trials/Struggles, and Legacy.
Acquisition, Trials/Struggles, and Legacy.
As she stated, acquisition is what being earned
during our younger years. According to her, having a ‘’Graceful Aging’’ is a
product of a happy childhood days and having a positive insight in life. She stated
a good start of courtship between child’s parents plus having readiness in
pregnancy by a woman means in defining one’s future. These factors will be
absorbed by an individual throughout his or her life. Thus, make him or her
well equip no matter how or what circumstances a person might meet.
Being nurture with love during younger years will
make a person a whole being. She thoroughly explained as well that a person (patients)
who had a joyful childhood will look on trials or struggle calmly and
positively. On the other hands, Legacy is something you can be passing on.
However for Miss Letty, it is how the family how much love and education in
person’s young age.
Application
of Theory
Based from the theory of Miss Letty Kuan, we nurse
who had been from a good childhood with loved should challenge ourselves. In
our area of practice, we can be able to render love and affection needed by our
patients. These can be done through hugging, cuddling a sick child or even offering
our time, giving a simple presence which is safe for the child, listening with
their burdens. As Miss Letty Kuan stated, “We should always have a bog heart,
big ears, and small mouth; a therapeutic ways of providing love to patient’s
.Our role is to give the love they have not received throughout their youthful
years. For these reason, we can be practice our part to somehow attain their
Graceful Aging”.
