Understanding Aging

Understanding Aging
By: Dr. Letty Kuan

Aging
• Is a slow process of growth towards full personhood, maturity of mind, body and spirit,
following the scheme of life„s framework of Acquisition, Struggle and Legacy. In theologal
spiritual life, this equates Faith, Hope and Love. The quality of what we acquire early in life
from conception to midlife years will equip us to combat struggle, crisis, trials in life starting
from mid stream years of life and will fruit out in happy graceful aging, a legacy of a life radiant
with love and goodness and kindness until we enter into our the beatific vision with God, the
creator and supreme author of life.

• Growing old is reaching a “happy plateau” but one must understand and accept what is aging at every phase of human growth and development with a generous heart, open mind and a faithful prayer life

• It brings a decreasing amount of energy over long periods of activities; hence slowing down
and moderation in our activity involvement is one reality of aging we all must realize and accept
it is a fact to reckon with that what is desirable is to feel comfortable, at ease with others and
happy with one‟s age. Never should one aspire to become caricatures of either age or youth, this is a myth and not anchored on reality of what life is

• Aging is a reality and must be accepted as a process towards fulfilment of a total self.
Developing positive attitudes towards aging while still young contributes a great deal to feeling
comfortable while growing old. Maximize the capacity to love and receive love, there is no
better attitude to develop than to be kind and good at each instant of our life. Life springs from
love and love for others with utmost respect for self and others too should grow for every year
that we grow with.

Elderly terms:

Elderly- is a classification of age group to any person reaching the mid 70‟s up to the80‟s
decade of life. However, in 2013, this elderly is now replaced with the term senior citizens in
order to be universally understood in one semantic.

Geriatics- a term given to people who are old or and who have pathological deficits who need assistance and care from family members and others engaged in health care services. There is so much structural and functional deficit, that they require support and care. This term signifies care given to old sick people. The status of being a geriatric patient depends on quality of health acquisition in earlier years, the healthier and pleasant the childhood health, the lesser is the tendency to become a geriatric patient.

Gerontology- means a study of the growing process of aging or normal, healthy and functional individuals, who are able to love, give love and receive love with humility and dignity of what the person is regardless of creed, race and social stratum.

Gerone - term given to people who are old but gracefully able to function as useful citizens at
home and in the community and an exemplar in fidelity to prayer life
